Mississippi Colleges started to be established from around 1860 AD. The Mississippi College located at Clinton (founded in 1826 is the oldest college in the state and possibly the oldest Baptist college in the world) and University of Mississippi at Oxford were established even before 1860. Racial issues clouded the educational scene until the middle of the twentieth century (Re: James Merediths admission to University of Mississippi protected by US Marshals under Federal Court Orders).
